WildCAT-C (Wildlife Conservation Action Team – Chikkamagaluru), is a wildlife conservation advocacy group, based in Chikkamagaluru District of Karnataka, India. We are a local community group, inspired by the global biodiversity hotspots where we live in, to secure its biodiversity richness for prosperity.

On the 2nd of February, 1971, the Convention of Wetlands was adopted in Ramsar, Iran, to provide the framework for the conservation of wetlands. Hence the day is celebrated as World Wetlands Day every year, and this year comes with the theme, ‘It’s time for wetland restoration’, it is, indeed.

Wetlands are ecosystems where the land is either covered or saturated with water, such as, rivers, lakes, swamps, saltwater marshes, mangroves, lagoons, coral reefs etc. They play a key role in controlling floods, recharging groundwater, storing carbon, maintaining biodiversity and purifying water. In spite of covering only 6% of the Earth’s land surface, 40% of all plant and animal species live and breed in wetlands.

Sadly, wetlands are under tremendous stress due to urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural intensification, land use changes, pollution etc. In over five decades, world has lost 35% of its wetland due to the menaces of human greed. It leads us to the same question, do humans deserve this planet?!

With this note, WildCAT-C wishes everyone a Happy Wetlands Day and urges everyone to be aware and responsible, and act sensibly towards the wilderness, as it not only keeps the planet alive, but sustains every other life on Earth.

The road to the hills of Chandradrona parvatha of Chikkamagaluru, once a path of peace and tranquility, is now clogged with unruly traffic and mayhem that is heartbreaking to witness.

With an intention to regulate this menace, the district administration has acknowledged a long pending proposal by WildCAT-C, to facilitate a large Way-side-amenity that will enable visitors; to park their vehicles; to using the available amenities there and to engage pre-designated transport to visit our hills in a more respectful manner.

WildCAT-C welcomes this unique initiative wholeheartedly and thanks the district administration, for taking this most needed and sensible step to protect our mighty hills.
